When I tell friends that I served in the army while doing my National Service, most of them will give a reaction that hovers between bewilderment and disbelief.
“How come you managed to serve in the army? I thought most of your kind usually ends up in the Police Force?”
I don’t blame them for harbouring this discernment. Singapore’s armed forces have long been thought to be out of bounds for the country’s Malays. Many are convinced that due to the proximity of the island to a host of Muslim countries including Malaysia, the Government is taking the precautionary measure of limiting the number of Malays who could operate its arsenal of sophisticated weapons.
In fact the perception is so widespread that former Indonesian President BJ Habibie once threw down a derogatory remark on the dismal number of Muslims in Singapore’s armed forces.
The latest army recruitment advertisement does not help in dispelling this misconception.
Featuring on TV for the past few weeks, the ad starts of with visuals of warriors in ancient China livery who looked liked they just walked out of a terracotta tomb – complete to the beat of Chinese drums and music. It ends off with some Mandarin sounding psyche chants and the narration, “Some things never change. Our army will always have the steel within”.
To the casual viewer, this may seem like a frivolous rant. It’s just an ad that is meant to capture the imagination of our young men who could be lured to serve in the army. It just so happens that these targeted young men are currently obsessed over medieval war movies and sword fighting. Marketing-wise, visuals of an ancient Chinese army could be deployed to best do the trick.
But what if the Singapore Civil Defence Force featured its own recruitment ad featuring nothing but Malay lads fighting fires to the beat of Malay rock music? Would not the whole nation take notice and cry discrimination? (Although an ad like that would not be too far off from the reality in our fire stations)
That is exactly how some in the minority races feel about this latest ad. It may be a good idea for people in marketing to consider such “trivial” sensitivities every now and then.
Of course I do not expect the army to show visuals of a multi-cultural ancient army wearing Chinese armour and Songkok*, marching to the beat of Chinese drums and Dondang Sayang**. But in the backdrop of our multi-racial society, a culturally-neutral approach would be best suited for anything that requires mass-consumption, especially on a media like national television.
But I think BJ Habibie would be thrilled with the idea of the Songkok.

**Traditional old Malay folk music that works better than sleeping pills.
tell me about it, man.
ReplyDeletei think it's done to tug at their angan angan heartstrings.
in any case, it's not a well-done ad. i get icky whenever it comes on.
Sometimes the majority race lose touch with the feelings of the minority. that is why they come up with an ad like this.
ReplyDeleteI feel so unwelcomed with the latest army ad who seem to favour a time of 3000 years ago when the Chinese feel that they are the most superior race on earth.
Im not saying that all ads should feature a multi-racial cast. Secular content is fine irregardless of the race. But when you feature something so deliberately chinese meant for viewing by a multi-racial population, you seem to suggest that only a certain race is favoured in the army. period.
I agree its insensitive
ReplyDeletewhile no ad can make everyone happy, it is a good point esp when the saf is trying to encourage its equal opportunities image.
ReplyDeleteOk i have to say that ur last ** was hilarious !!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your sentiments. When i first saw the ad, i tot it was a chinese war movie trailer...
hi there, Ridzwan,
ReplyDeleteWhile I can understand the natural preference over the malays in sensitive units for security reasons, as history has shown our neighbours sending in people of malay race to create racial troubles for us, both in the community and in 'black ops' (courtesy from indonesia), I do agree with you that we should not commit a racial slanted commercial such as the one which you listed with feudal chinese-looking army, afterall, we are situated in the middle of the malay archipelago.
while I cannot represent my race to apologise to you, i am assured that since we both been through national service, the top echelons of the defence organisation is probably busy / clueless / too removed from reality (as all current leaders of the officials in the current govt set-ups seem to be / or just in plain denial), I urge your understanding that with time, give it > 10 years, we would be more racial / gender / disability / age neutral in our ads, as our country is a young nation caught up with its means for survival.
no prizes for guessing why we make good pre-australians / canadian / etc citizens, we are just too small and singapore is too organisation-like to rub any patriotic feelings on me at least.
:)
i enjoy your posts, though i don't agree with the muslim doctrine of thoughts, but that doesn't mean we need to focus on what we disagree on.
I believe we are in agreements on that.
cheers
I, too, am appalled by the ad.
ReplyDeleteI have experienced first-hand such "favouritism" when I was in the army. I was denied several times from taking up posts or jobs that were deemed "sensitive" or "of high national security risk". Not once, not twice nor thrice... you get the idea. I guess it could happen to anyone really.
I love your article, man. Keep it up!
Maybe they are trying to attract the mainland cinas to join the army. Opportunities for all - locals and foreigners!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Sinopore...
ReplyDeleteFor a moment, I thought it was a Jay Chou MTV. This is so cheesy. Who is the producer? And, which esteemed scholar soldier approved this crappy insensitive advertisement?
ReplyDeleteOne more thing: How much of the taxpayer's money was used?
Nah, I think you're reading too much into this.
ReplyDeleteWe must give people the benefit of doubt, where feasible. If not we will become very sensitive and have a myopic view of things.
I do agree with you that the Ad was improper though.
What in the world were these dumb clowns behind a desk thinking, when they came out with this stupid idea of Chinese warriors from centuries past?
Of all the possible scenarios they could have come out with, they produced an Ad with little or no relevance to the modern army. Even if relevance (to show steel)can be deduced, it does not come out as obvious in the Ad.
You must really focus to catch the intended message, which goes against the very grain of producing Ads - to highlight something in the easiest way possible, so that the message sticks with the audience.
Cheers.
I simply don't understand why this country doesn't start National Service for all its citizens regardless of race, language or religion.
ReplyDeleteWhy have the military and police be Muslims?
Why can't the public sector & stats boards funded by the private sector taxpayers' be open to non-Muslims as well?
Why? Why? Why?
The public universities, the various licences, the low-cost housing, etc., are religious & racial based not merit even after 50 years of independence!
History has shown that the Emperor stopped the marauding Siamese from attacking it otherwise today it be one long Yala Peninsula. Who shed blood fighting the Japanese occupiers and colonialist Brits there when others collaborated (LOL) with the enemies?
No wonder the victims continue migrate endlessly.
Check the facts out from the net and other sources.

ReplyDeleteWe should all migrate to Malaysia and enjoy the NEP.

ReplyDeleteEveryone knows the JI wants to include Singapore as part of their declared Pan Islamic empire in SE Asia; spanning S Thailand right across, through Malaysia and up to Mindanao in the S Philippines.
"JI" is not stamped across the forehead of a person or is it, Mr Ridzwan? Theirs is strictly a skewed religious cause and not abt how minorities are "apartheid" as is legislated by the majority and practised elsewhere.
Among the jihadis who blew up the subway & bus in the UK were apparently decent Muslims. One, even a teacher in a public school. Surprise?
Remember a our local Islamist lawyer detained recently? In fact, a couple of the JI terrorists napped here had even undergone National Service in the army!
Therein lies the dilemma of a fair and secular tiny, resourceless, city state who only wants to feed its people well. What would you have done if you were wearing the other person's shoes? Wait till Yishun MRT be blown up first or Changi Airport be flattened first?
As Gurmit would say, "Use your brans lah . . . "
So Singaporeans shouldn't take chances at all and shd always remember the Scouts' motto: "Be Prepared!"
Unlike Guantanamo, the humane and kind treatment meted out to our local JI jihadis did not pay. The unshackled Mas Selamat is still at large despite a $1 million bounty over his head.
Stand up for Singapore!

Get the historical facts right first. Check the internet.
The powerful Ming Emperor not only warned the territorial Siamese to keep the peace but also appointed the Sultan, an interloper from Indonesia, with its seal and accompanying protocol to govern Melaka, a cosmopolitan trading place then, fairly & impartially. A powerful China spearheaded by Admiral Zheng He did not set out to colonise backward countries unlike the West which still holds on to the temperate countries of Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
President Hu and PM Wen today call itself a developing country and continue to give unattached aid to poor countries all over the world (check out the UN). The number of friends China has today stands testimony to its generosity & friendliness.
When China entered into a period of civil war bt the Communist & Kuomintang, a weakened China was attacked by Japan from the outside. Britain poured in opium and the West started to carve out concessions like HK and Macau.
Ancient China gave the world freely a lot of its ingenious inventions eg gunpower, compass, paper . . . (without the need for patent or copyrights as the West demands today).
The Chinese were civilised more than 5 000 years. They are basically a hardworking and entrepreneurial people who don't believe in violence. Today Chinese taikongnauts walk in space and China tops the gold medal tally in the recent Olympic Games. It is also the world richest country in terms of the $2 trillion foreign reverses it holds.
The Chinese dont' don't yell "Kekuatan Cina" and brandish their swords to intimidate the minorities.
We don't have to suffer from an inferiority complex. The Chinese aren't a superior race. Only a compassionate and pragmatic people I guess.

ReplyDeleteWow. I've seen de ad a few times. But i nvr really noticed...or maybe i'm just soo used to seeing everyting 'cheena' abt S'pore. Afterall, what ISNT a tad too cheena in S'pore?
But i agree the ad is insensitive. But i also agree abt de thingy of y there arent many muslims in our army. By de way i'm a muslim. But if i were living in a muslim cty surrounded by many non-muslim ctys, i'd be weary sooner of later.
I am not complaining.
ReplyDeleteIf we were at war with malaysia, a muslim ends up killing because of asabiyya that would be wrong.
